We liken this to the early days of HDTV, when television makeup artists had to learn new techniques since the video resolution was so much better and every mistake was magnified. Videographers hoping for the highest-end video features here will be disappointed. The LCD is a 3-inch, 1,440k-dot panel with support for touch input. It's a bit easier to keep track of moving targets at the slightly slower rate, and gives you a little more real-world time before the buffer fills to capacity. Bill, I have done a lot of wildlife photography, and some birds, formerly with Canon and more recently with Sony. It's a fine option for working in environments where you must be quiet—courtrooms and concert halls are examples—but it will absolutely introduce the rolling shutter effect for fast-moving subjects. You'll likely spend some time getting it configured to match your style. Opting for Super35mm improves the video quality, taking a 6K feed from the central area of the sensor and downsampling it to 4K. The biggest change in that time is how the E-mount (used on all Sony mirrorless cameras) has grown to dominate the mirrorless sector, with 52 Sony lenses available and a whole lot more from third parties. Sony states the a7R IV features improved protection against dust and splashes, with some extra sealing around the doors that cover its data ports, as well as around the battery compartment. It tracks subjects—just as you would when shooting stills, with face and eye detection—when recording at 1080p and 4K. For my first trip, I coupled the camera with a brand new Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS and my trusty Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA in A-mount, which I’ve been using for almost five years now. It's not like the a9, which uses a different type of image sensor that can read data from top to bottom much faster, so its electronic shutter is able to freeze action in its place. What’s more, the A7R IV delivers a claimed 15 stops of dynamic range for “breathtaking realism,” according to Sony, which puts it well within — and potentially even above — medium format territory. It compensates for shake along five axes, which is certainly beneficial given its sensor design, as high-resolution images are more prone to show the effects of camera shake, and it effectively smooths away jitters and jumps in handheld video footage. The a7R IV features two SDXC card slots, both supporting UHS-II speeds. Sony's touch interface isn't as robust as others—it's not active for camera menus, for example—but it does allow you to tap to focus and swipe through images during playback. In the past, the line between full-frame and medium format systems was clear—if you wanted a medium format camera, you had to spend a lot and stick to photographing static subjects and models. The wheel is flanked by Fn, Play, and Delete/C4 buttons. The handgrip has been changed, with a slightly larger design and deeper indentation. Sony set the bar for full-frame mirrorless and continues to lead the way, and not just with resolution. The Fn launches an on-screen control menu with quick access to a dozen customizable settings banks. The buffer holds up to 68 Extra Fine JPEGs. You can frame shots using the rear LCD or eye-level EVF. Despite its high resolution, it can shoot at up to 10 frames per second with full autofocus and shoot 4K video either from the full width of its sensor or from an APS-C/Super 35 crop. Engaging the lock solves the problem. It's much more significant at ISO 51200 and 102400. There are three control dials, C1 and C2 buttons, and the shutter release, which is surrounded by the On/Off toggle switch. I can shoot tiny jumping spiders, assassin bugs, flowers, lichen, moss, and all kinds of incredibly tiny subjects. Sony cameras have a good feel, nice balance, and logical placement of key controls, and the A7R IV improves on this with a deeper grip, improved moisture and dust resistance, a lock button on the exposure compensation dial, a textured autofocus joystick, and a few other minor enhancements. I won't call them identical, because there are certainly variables, but they're close. The a7R IV continues the tradition, matching the 10fps speed, and offering improved autofocus coverage. It is able to load saved settings from a memory card, a plus if you own multiple bodies or want to quickly set up a rental for a shoot. Available in AF-C mode, it identifies subjects and keeps the focus system locked on them as they move through the frame. Add a lens, like the G Master 85mm f/1.4 ($1,800) we tested, and the rig grows to a hefty weight, but it is still manageable. The subjects Sony supplied for the event ranged from old Miami Vice-type vignettes to modern dancers and Vogue-like fashion scenarios. I processed Raw images from our ISO test scene in Adobe Lightroom and have included pixel-level crops from the scene the slideshow that accompanies this review. Good luck to them. While I couldn't get the a7R IV to output the overlay information over HDMI when it was set to 4K resolution, I was able to observe the system working on the camera itself. It's typically tuned to show more detail, and a bit more grain, than a JPG engine by default. Note that at the time of writing this article, I was only able to shoot in JPG with the camera. If you're familiar with other Sony cameras, you won't have much trouble getting around, though you may still struggle to locate a feature you don't often utilize if you don't know where to look for it. With a setting change, the EyeAF is able to work with animals instead of humans. Yet here we are in 2019 and the numbers keep soaring into the stratosphere. I have the a7R4 and the a9 (waiting for the new a92). It's a small tweak, but sometimes the little touches are what matters. The same can be said for any camera, but the AF system in the A7R IV goes a long way helping you get more keepers than not. The C3 and Menu buttons are at the top left of the rear plate. For Sony, their aps-c Sony A77 hit 24 megapixels in 2011 and the full frame Sony A99 hit 24 megapixels in 2008. It keeps file sizes down, to about 60MP per photo, without any real sacrifice. The a7R IV doesn't stray too far from the template Sony has set for other recent models in the series, including the a7R III that came before it. Color balance and individual channels can be adjusted with aplomb with Raw, and the files deliver 15 stops of dynamic range, so you can lift shadows and reign in highlights with great freedom. There are 12 ISO settings available on the Sony A7R IV. With the Mark IV you no longer have to go into the menu system to enable Eye AF, as it is on by default. The memory card door has been redesigned, dropping a release switch in favor of a simple pull-to-open action. The samples we used were production-ready in terms of image quality, but the bodies and the attendant circuitry were a little squirrelly and likely to be updated before the cameras hit store shelves. It's not easy to press with the camera to your eye, but most video work is done using the rear display or an external monitor. The LCD can tilt to face up or down, but doesn't face forward or swing out to the side. You can see it in action in the clip above, captured using an Atomos Ninja V recorder. There's no 60fps support for 4K in any mode. If you use Uncompressed Raw, the camera manages about 7fps for 30 shots before the buffer fills. The Sony A7r4 offers further significant improvements to the point where the ergonomics are actually good. Your privacy is important to Matt Granger . The camera must be on a tripod and the subject perfectly still (so, portraits are out), but that’s an incredible amount of detail. Until then, we’ll count the days until that happens — and hope other manufacturers step up their game by introducing cameras that can meet or beat the A7R IV. Aside from needing perfect focus, there is another “negative” about all that resolution, though — it can be really unforgiving. Museums that may have invested in high-resolution medium format equipment for archival work in the past might find the 240MP output offered by the a7R IV to be adequate. It's not until you move to ISO 25600 and above that images take a serious hit in quality. Many of the shooting scenarios we were presented were static, where the 85mm was a winner, but others featured dancers twirling and leaping into the air, where it couldn’t keep up during high-speed bursts.
